Traditional Thai Massage in Phuket

Last year Thailand broke the Guinness World Record for mass massage with an astonishing 641 therapists simultaneously performing a 12 minute massage on volunteers; more than doubling the previous record held by Australia in 2010.

Phuket has hundreds of massage shops and spas dotted around the island offering an array of stress relieving massages from head to feet. The average rate for a massage along the south west coastal areas of Phuket has risen sharply to 300 baht for an hour from about 200 baht in the last few years, probably due to rising property rental costs and the general increase in the cost of living in Phuket. But this is still a fraction of the cost charged in other countries where Thai massage parlors are becoming increasingly popular.

Away from the tourist areas and in Phuket Town massage rates are much less, as are the several blind massage centres operating in Phuket. The blind massage shops provide a much needed income to the blind, who otherwise have very limited employment opportunities.

The traditional Thai massage, believed to have been practiced for over 2000 years, combines yoga stretching, acupressure and meditation. It is claimed the Thai massage has both physical and mental benefits; improving blood circulation, relaxing aching muscles and reducing stress.

Reflexology and aromatherapy are also available at most massage parlors and in recent years some massage shops and spas in Phuket have tanks full of ‘doctor fish’ outside. The doctor fish, or Garra Rufa to give it its proper name, feed on the dead skin on feet and the treatment is thought to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis. This practice has been outlawed in some states of America and Canada on the grounds that it is unsanitary.
